I’ve said it before and I know one day I’ll say it again, but this had to be the best birthday ever! My excitement for the big day started a few weeks ago when JJ and I were letting the dogs out and discussing what I wanted to do for my actual birthday (that’s Friday, July 24th incase you got confused with #Lolasbirthdayweek via instagram). Since I had a girls dinner Thursday and we already planned Montelucia resort on Saturday, I figured Friday would be a fairly mellow night. He gave me a devilish smirk and mentioned that he already made plans for us on Friday. That alone made me beam with excitement as he typically looks at me for birthday inspiration every year. A birthday surprise? What is it? He told me all I need to do is wake up early, pack a day bag, and that I’m definitely going to cry. What? We are going somewhere? I’m crying? Can the dogs come? The next couple of weeks were hell trying to think where he was going to take me. A day trip… in the middle of summer… in Arizona. Sedona? Hot air balloon ride in the morning? Another resort? Horseback riding? I loved spending time daydreaming about what it could be.
Thursday afternoon came and I rushed to my appointment at Laser Away right after work. 5pm hit and I was all of a sudden getting, “where are you” text messages from JJ. Take it eeeeasy, we still had an hour and half to pack before he was leaving and I was going to my girls dinner. I walk in the door, greeted by my barking yet excited pups and think … time to pack for whatever adventure we are going on! As I’m walking up to him, I notice is he holding his phone and recording me. I instantly thought, oh…he has a present he wants me to open. I walk a little closer and all of a sudden I hear, SURPRISE! My sister, Lexie pops out from behind the wall! I instantly start screaming and run to hug her! There was hugging, jumping up and down, crying (he was right), and more hugging before JJ said, “we actually aren’t going anywhere tomorrow, this is your surprise.” The best surprise.
My sister came to visit us in February of this year, after not seeing each other for over a year. We had the best time and were really sad when she had to leave. We just had such a good time together! JJ knew how sad we both were so shortly after he made the plans to fly her out for my birthday as a surprise. What a husband!
That night we went to Sumo Maya, a Mexican Asian Kitchen in Scottsdale. Lexie, Luela, Shannon, Savannah, Tara, Mia, Brianna, and Lindsay joined me for a fun night of cocktails, laughs, and just plain girl-talk. Sneak peek from Brianna’s YouTube. I’ve been so truly blessed to gain such a fun, creative, inspiring group of women in Phoenix and was so happy to celebrate together!

On Friday, Lexie and I had massages, lunch and lounged by the pool at Camelback Inn. Probably one of the best deep issue massages I’ve ever had. I’d definitely recommend Kristine! Later that evening, JJ, Lexie and I met up with Brie and Bryan at Diego Pops for happy hour. What we thought was a little happy hour turned into a late night in Old town for us three. Yikes! But we had a great time.

The morning after, we settled our hangovers with some burritos (aka more Mexican) and set off to Montelucia Resort to meet friends and lounge by the pool. It was a great day followed by an even better evening at their restaurant, Prado. We arrived on time to soon be informed that we were being moved to their private room in the wine cellar. The room was absolutely beautiful and it made me feel so special that they did that for us. The food was incredible and service was probably one of the best I’ve ever had in the city. The one thing my friends and I are still boasting about… the bread! The best bread we’ve ever had… hands down! Thank you to the staff at Prado for making my birthday dinner one I’ll never forget.
