I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the people who Photoshop and manipulate their photos on social media. I don’t know about you, but this subject really irks me.
In 2014, someone came up with the IPhone app called Facetune. A portrait editor which allows you to achieve magazine -style results. I downloaded the app and thought, “Wow… this is amazing! An app that easily gives me flawless skin and perfect teeth.” I hadn’t really noticed other people using it at the time so I thought I’d give it a try. I remember facetuning photographs from my sister- in -laws bachelorette party in San Diego and looking back… I didn’t look human. It was completely noticeable that I manipulated those photos. I cut ties with the “smooth” tool yet saw more and more people rocking the familiar glow around their faces via Instagram. Social media is too easy of a place to manipulate how you want to look or even how you want to be portrayed. You pick the best angle, the best photo out of the 50 other ones that you just took and you upload it to your newsfeed as if, “I woke up like this.” Don’t get me wrong, many of us do it but where do we draw the line?
What happened to being authentic? Natural? What happens when a company asks to meet you in person yet are shocked to find out that you Photoshop your face and body to look ten pounds skinnier? How do people get away with it?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this subject. Below you will find my “perfect” photograph.
Be Kind,
Lola
